Bury covers a very wide range in a small area. Radcliffe, Elton and the streets near the centre are dense Victorian terracing where the kitchen is usually a back room and space is the whole problem. Ramsbottom, Holcombe Brook, Summerseat and Greenmount are stone-built and considerably grander, often with high ceilings, large windows and rooms that were never laid out for a modern kitchen at all. Whitefield and Prestwich sit between the two, mostly solid inter-war semis where knocking the kitchen through into the dining room is the usual starting point.
In the bigger Ramsbottom and Holcombe properties the mistake we most often see is standard-height wall units in a room with a three-metre ceiling, which leaves a metre of dead wall above them and makes the whole kitchen look undersized. Because we build our own carcasses we can run the units up to where they should stop rather than where a catalogue says they stop.
