Preston has an unusually wide mix. The terraces off Deepdale and New Hall Lane are compact and need every millimetre used properly. Fulwood and Penwortham are largely inter-war semis, where the classic job is knocking the kitchen into the back dining room and rebuilding it as one space. Broughton, Grimsargh and the newer estates north of the city are modern builds, where the kitchen is usually a reasonable size already but was fitted to a developer's budget and is ready for a proper replacement long before the house is.
That last case is worth being clear about. Builder-standard kitchens in new estates are normally 15mm carcasses with basic hinges. Ours are 18mm throughout with soft-close as standard, so the difference is obvious the first time you close a door. You are also buying from the factory rather than through a retailer, so more of your budget ends up in the product.
