Darwen is a stone and brick terraced town, and the older houses around Sunnyhurst, Whitehall and Bolton Road tend to have narrow galley kitchens with a chimney breast in an awkward place. There are larger semis and detached houses up towards Hoddlesden and Blacksnape where people more often knock through into a dining room and want an island.
