Rossendale is built on the sides of a steep valley, and it shows in the houses. Stone terraces run up the hillsides in Rawtenstall, Waterfoot and Bacup, and a great many of them are split over more levels than the front elevation suggests, with the kitchen half a storey down or tucked behind a cellar head. Floors slope, ceilings drop under a staircase, and the walls are thick stone that will not take a standard fixing. Helmshore, Edenfield and Crawshawbooth have larger stone and detached properties where the rooms are generous but rarely square.
This is the sort of housing where a catalogue kitchen quietly becomes expensive.
